Last August I had the opportunity to join Gochang Camp for few days. At the beginning I was a little concerned because I didn’t know any of the people that will join the camp. Furthermore, living as a foreign student in Seoul is very convenient and being from a big city myself I wasn’t sure if I could adapt to life in the countryside. However, everything turned out great!
지난 8월에 전 고창 캠프에 며칠간 참가할 기회가 있었습니다. 처음엔 같이 참가하는 사람 중에 아는 사람이 전혀 없어서 조금 불안했습니다. 게다가 대도시인 서울에서 외국인 유학생으로 사는건 매우 편한데, 내가 시골로 가도 잘 적응할 수 있을까 라는 점이 걱정되기도 했습니다. 그렇지만 결론부터 말하자면 모든게 굉장히 즐거웠습니다.
We arrived at Gochang on August 1st. I remember it was very hot in Seoul and I felt relieved as soon as we got there. The participants were mainly Korean students but there was also a nice Japanese student and me, from Argentina. Between Korean, English and Japanese we managed to understand each other. It was definitely an international atmosphere. I was surprised how much Korean students knew about my country and their abilities to communicate in English even though they were still very young.
우리는 8월 1일에 고창에 도착했습니다. 제가 기억하기로는 서울은 정말 더웠는데, 고창에 도착하고는 안도의 한숨을 내쉬었습니다. 참가자들은 주로 한국인 학생들이었는데, 한국인말고도 일본인 친구 한 명과 아르헨티나에서 온 저도 있었습니다. 한국어 영어 일본어가 오가는 사이에서 우리는 서로를 이해하기 위해 노력했습니다. 그야말로 국제적인 분위기였습니다. 전 한국 친구들이 내 나라에 대해 많이 알고 있어서, 그리고 저렇게나 젊은 친구들이 저렇게나 영어로 의사소통을 잘 해낸다는 점에 놀랐습니다.
During our days in Gochang we did many things. We played games, went sightseeing, cooked together, etc. Besides having fun, we also learned a lot and had new experiences. One day we did volunteer work at a local farm. I still remember that day… we woke up very early to help the local farmers pick up red peppers. It was a very interesting experience for me. I realized how hard life in the countryside can also be. After finishing our work we had breakfast with the local community. They prepared a delicious breakfast that we shared under a Korean style pavilion. The people of Gochang are kind and generous, always willing to help and to share their life experiences with us. I was happy to be able to talk in Korean with them!
고창에서 지내는 동안 우리는 많은 활동들을 했습니다. 게임도 하고 경치를 구경하러 나서기도 하고 요리도 같이 했습니다. 그렇게 즐거운 시간을 보내는 한 편으로, 우린 많은 것을 배우고 또 많은 경험을 했습니다. 아직도 기억에 생생한 하루가 있습니다. 하루는 고창의 농장에서 봉사활동을 했는데, 농장의 고추 수확을 돕기 위해 우린 매우 일찍 일어났습니다. 정말 즐거운 경험이었습니다. 시골에서의 삶이 얼마나 힘들지, 그리고 얼마나 힘들어질 수 있는지를 느낄 수 있는 소중한 시간이었습니다. 일이 끝난 후엔 지역 커뮤니티와 함께 아침밥을 먹었습니다. 지역 커뮤니티에서 맛있는 아침식사를 준비해서 정자에서 같이 식사를 했습니다. 고창의 사람들은 모두가 친절하고 또 마음이 넓어서, 늘 그들의 삶이나 경험을 우리와 기꺼이 나눴습니다. 전 한국어로 그들과 대화할 수 있어서 정말 기뻤습니다.
My favorite activity was visiting Seonun Temple located in Gochang. A local guide took us around the temple and explained us its history. I`m studying Korean studies and I have always been interested in history, therefore, I found it very interesting. After visiting the temple we stop by the river. The students were happy playing in the water and so was I. At that time it felt good to be away from the city. We had a lot of fun. After playing we had ice cream!
가장 좋았던 경험은 고창에 있는 선운사에 방문한 것입니다. 지역 가이드분께서 저희를 절로 데리고 가서 절의 역사라든가 절에 대해서 설명해줬습니다. 전 한국학을 공부하고 있고 그래서 늘 역사에는 관심이 많습니다. 그래서 정말 흥미로운 시간이 아닐 수 없었습니다. 절을 방문한 후엔 강에서 잠시 시간을 보냈습니다. 학생들도 그리고 저도 물놀이를 하며 즐거운 한 때를 보냈습니다. 그 때 저는 도시에서 멀리 떨어진 곳에서 사는것의 즐거움에 대해 느꼈습니다. 정말 즐거웠습니다. 그렇게 놀고 우린 아이스크림을 먹었습니다.
Three days passed and it was time for me to leave Gochang. The students seemed sad when they found out that I had to go. I was sad too but at the same time I felt happy for having joined the camp at least for few days. Now that I`m back in the city and that the semester has started again I can’t wait for the next camp. I definitely think that the places I`ve seen and the people I met will stay in my mind forever.
3일이 지나고 고창을 떠나야 할 시간이 왔습니다. 학생들은 제가 떠나야 할 때가 왔다는 것을 알자 슬픈 기색을 감추지 못했습니다. 저도 슬펐지만 한편으로는 비록 며칠뿐이었을지라도 캠프에 참가할 수 있어서 정말 행복했습니다. 전 이제 도시에 돌아와있고 학기도 시작했습니다. 그렇지만 또 캠프에 갈 생각에 벌써부터 들떠있습니다. 제가 보고 느낀 사람들 장소들 그 모든것들을 영원히 마음속에 담아둘것입니다.
