안녕하십니까? 저는 김 태근입니다.

 

저는 시마네 현의 해안에 쌓이는 쓰레기를 제거하는 프로젝트에 참여하기 위해 올해에 두 번째로 이곳에 왔습니다. 지난 해 여름에 이곳을 방문하였을 때 제가 느낀 감정은 말 그대로 충격 그 자체였습니다.

이곳에서 버스를 타고 처음으로 해변으로 향하면서 저는 “해변에 쌓였다는 쓰레기 문제가 정말 얼마나 심각하겠어? 아마도 어느 정도의 플라스틱 병이나 포장지 정도겠지”하고 생각했습니다.

그러나 해변에 도착하여 재 두 눈으로 본 광경은 제 생각이 얼마나 틀렸는지를 여실히 보여 주었습니다. 해변에 쌓여 있는 쓰레기는 제가 예상했던 것보다 정말 많았습니다. 저를 놀라게 한 것은 양뿐만이 아니라 쓰레기가 어디서 왔느냐 하는 것이었습니다.

쓰레기를 주우면서 한국의 편의점에서 쉽게 볼 수 있는 제품의 포장지와 병들을 쉽게 볼 수 있었습니다.

 

 

또한 한국의 어선들이 버린 부표들과 플라스틱 통들을 볼 수 있었습니다. 일본의 해변에 한국으로부터 온 쓰레기를 봤을 때 저는 한국인으로서 매우 당혹스러웠습니다. 쓰레기의 많은 부분이 한국에서 온 것들이었기에 저는 한국에 돌아 온 후에 친구, 선생님, 그리고 제 가족을 포함하여 많은 사람들에게 이 문제에 대해서 말을 하였습니다.

그러나 이 문제에 대한 인지도는 매우 낮았습니다. 이 문제에 대한 낮은 인지도는 이 문제의 해결을 위해서는 매우 우려가 되는 것이었습니다. 왜냐하면 문제를 일으키는 쪽에서는 문제를 인지하지 못하고 있는 상황에서 문제를 겪고 있는 쪽에서만 문제가 있다고 외치는 것은 마치 “소 귀에 경읽기”라는 한국 속담과 같은 상황이기 때문입니다.

 

제가 올해에도 시마네 현에 다시 돌아 온 것은 이러한 상황의 심각성을 인지하고 이 문제의 해결에 긍정적인 기여를 하기 위해서 입니다. 저는 최대한 많은 양의 쓰레기를 치우는 노력을 하여 이곳에서 쓰레기의 문제를 안고 살아야 하는 주민들을 위해 작지만 의미가 있는 노력을 하겠습니다. 또한 저는 두 번째 방문을 통해 이 문제에 대해서 가능한 많은 것을 배움으로써 한국에 돌아가 이 문제에 대한 정보를 한국에 알리고 싶습니다.

여섯 명이 참여한 작년과는 달리 20여명의 한국 청소년들이 올해의 방문에 동참한다는 소식을 들었을 때 저는 매우 기뻤습니다.

올해에 새로이 참여하는 학생들 또한 이번 방문을 통해 이 문제에 대해 많은 것을 배우고 느끼게 될 것이며 저와 같이 자신들의 경험을 다른 한국인들과 공유하게 될 것이 때문입니다.

 

제 의견으로는 이 문제를 해결하기 위해서는 다양한 관련 기관 및 단체가 열심히 노력해야 한다고 생각합니다. 우선적으로 가장 시급한 부분은 정책적인 노력이라고 생각합니다. 양국 정부는 당면 과제인 쓰레기의 수집 및 재활용과 관련된 해결책뿐만이 아니라 이러한 문제의 근본적 원인을 해결하기 위한 노력을 같이 수행하여야 한다고 생각합니다.

둘째 양국의 비영리 단체들은 다양한 매체를 통해 이러한 문제의 심각성에 대해서 양국민에게 알리는 노력을 같이 해야 할 것입니다.

마지막으로 이러한 프로그램에 참여하는 저를 포함한 모든 사람들이 트위터, 페이스북 등과 같은 Social Network Service 매체를 활용하여 정부나 비영리 단체의 노력에 동참하고 긍정적인 기여를 할 수 있도록 노력하여야 합니다.

 

이웃 나라로서 일본과 한국은 역사적, 문화적, 그리고 경제적으로 매우 밀접한 관계를 가지고 있습니다. 지난 역사 중에 양국의 관계는 긍정적인 부분도 있었지만 부정적인 부분도 있었습니다.

그렇지만 저와 제 동료들 그리고 이 자리에 계신 여러분들이 우리 앞에 놓인 이 문제를 해결하기 위해 함께 노력을 하여 긍정적인 결과를 만들어 낼 수 있다면 두 국가간 그리고 두 민족간의 오해와 불신을 줄일 수 있는 좋은 기회라고 생각합니다.

여기 모인 양국의 청소년들이 같이 모여 서로에 대한 이해의 폭을 넓히고자 노력을 한다면, 바다로부터 밀려 오는 쓰레기라고 하는 귀찮고 힘든 문제를 해결할 수 있는 방안은 공동으로 만들 수 있을 것입니다.

이러한 공동의 노력은 일본과 대한민국 두 국가가 지금보다 더욱 더 긍정적인 관계를 만들어 가기 위한 여정에서 작지만 큰 의미있는 기여를 할 수 있을 저는 믿어 의심치 않습니다.

 

마음이 있는 곳에 사랑이 있다는 말과 같이 서로 같은 마음을 공유하고 이해의 폭을 넓히고자 하는 노력이 필요한 시점이라고 생각합니다. 짧은 기간이지만 여러분들의 적극적인 참여를 부탁 드립니다. 감사합니다.

Hi. My name is Tae Keun Kim

 

It is my second time to Shimane Prefecture participating in this project of collecting garbage patches in its shores. My first visit to Shimane last summer was, to simply put it, a shocking experience. On my first bus trip to the beaches for the cleanup, I asked to myself ‘How bad can this sea trash problem be? It is probably just a few pieces of wrappers and plastic bottles.’ When I arrived and looked at the shores, what I saw with my bear eyes shattered my imaginations. The amount of garbage patch accumulated in the beaches was far more than what I expected. It was not only the quantity of the trash that surprised me but also the origin of the trash surprised me even more. As I was picking up numerous wrappers and plastic bottles, it was not hard to find trashes of beverages and snacks I often see in the convenient stores in Korea. There were also a lot of buoys and plastic containers consisting of unknown and possibly dangerous liquids from Korean fishing vessels. When I saw those Korean trashes lying in the Japanese shores, it was an embarrassing moment for me as a Korean citizen. Since trashes originating from Korea took a large proportion, back in Korea I talked to lots of my friends, teachers and family members about this problem. The awareness level among Koreans of this issue was very low as almost no one heard about such problem. This lack of awareness in Korea is not a good sign for the resolution of this problem because if only the receiving end of a problem recognizes and acts on it, while the source of the problem is not even aware of it, the problem can never be solved.

 

I came back this year because I want to play a positive role in resolving this problem. I am willing to do as many cleanups as possible to be a small yet meaningful help to the local residents. I also wish to learn more about this issue so that I can spread more information about this problem when I go back to Korea. I was very happy to hear that twenty middle and high school students were to participate in this year’s program compare to only six last year. I am sure that new participants will learn a lot about this issue during their stay in Shimane and share their experiences to other Koreans.

 

In my opinion, a lot of work has to be done by different groups of authority to solve this problem. Both governments should work together and discuss about how to remove and recycle the garbage patch off the shores as well as how to prevent this problem happening. Second, NGOs from both countries need to work harder to inform this problem to the public through various media, and organize grass-root efforts to stop the dumping of garbage. In addition, individuals like myself and other participants of this project can also support and contribute to such efforts by utilizing social network medias such as Twitter and Facebook and creating relevant sites and communities to educate fellow teenagers.

 

As neighboring countries, Korea and Japan has been intertwined both historically and culturally. There have been positive sides, but some negative parts and mishaps as well. If two nations successfully help each other to deal with the garbage patch problems in western Japanese shores, such outcome can help to reduce the level of misunderstandings between two. By solving and settling this conflict, Korea and Japan will take a small yet significant step forward in the journey toward building a better relationship.
